Samantha Bebb

Samantha Bebb is the author of Unburdened by Midnight, her debut novel, set in rural Gulf Coast Alabama in 1955 — a county of the living, and of haints that keep their own hours.

She was trained as a civil engineer — Gonzaga University, then a master’s in engineering management from Missouri University of Science and Technology — and served twenty years as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She writes now from a homestead in western Montana, with the long habit of someone who has built things that have to hold.

The novel comes out of an attention to place: who a road belongs to, what a kitchen hears, and the sentence a county will not say at supper. Reza’s arrival is the way in. The coast, in 1955, is not asked to be charming about it.
